I grew up watching two entirely different worlds coexisting under the very same sky. The way cattle are viewed across the globe versus how we view them here is as different as night and day.

In most Western countries, cows are just farm animals. They are raised for milk, meat, or leather. People there are direct and practical about it. It is strictly business, with no emotions involved.

In India, the story is completely different. A cow is not just an animal here. We call her ‘Gau Mata’ (Mother Cow) and worship her like a goddess. She is a deep part of our culture and traditions. To outsiders, this might look like a blind belief, but to people here, it is sacred heritage.

But if you look past the prayers, emotional speeches, and political slogans, you will see a painful reality. Right in front of our eyes on the daily streets, there is a big contradiction and hypocrisy that nobody wants to talk about.

Divinity vs. The Harsh Reality of the Streets

In ancient India, worshipping cows did not start from blind belief. There was a strong financial reason behind it. Back then, people relied on farming, and the cow was the main support of the family. She gave milk to drink, bulls to plow the fields, and dung for fuel. Killing a cow meant destroying a family’s entire future for just one meal. So, a simple practical need slowly turned into a holy belief, giving the cow the status of ‘Gau Mata’.

Fast forward to today, a short walk down any city street shows the huge gap between that holy status and today’s reality.

Uncomfortable Truths Behind Our Holy Pretense!

When you ask real questions about our devotion, our selfish motives become clear very fast:

Why Only the Cow?: Buffalo milk has more fat, and buffaloes are responsible for nearly 80 percent of our dairy industry’s success. Yet, buffaloes get zero respect or holy status. Why is an animal that feeds millions treated only like a work machine? Simple: because the cow got the divine ‘Kamadhenu’ tag, while the buffalo did not.

How Did We Forget Bulls?: For generations, bulls plowed our farm fields. The moment tractors came, bulls lost their jobs. Since bulls cannot give milk, they have no money value. With no work and no milk, millions of bulls are left to die as abandoned strays on the road.

The ‘Bobby Veal’ Scandal!: To keep a continuous supply of daily milk, a cow must give birth once every year. Modern farming uses artificial methods to make this happen, but half of all newborn calves turn out to be male. Since male calves do not give milk, they have zero value to dairy farmers. The industry’s cold solution to this problem is ‘Bobby Veal’ taking newborn male calves away from their mothers within 24 to 48 hours of birth and sending them to be killed for meat. And where are the most bobby veals produced in the world? Do you want an answer? Okay, let me give you a small puzzle for your brain fill in the blank: New Zealand and ______ (Need a clue? A cow-worshipping country!). Where is the holy respect for these newborn sons of ‘Gau Mata’?

The World’s Second-Largest Meat Exporter: India is the second-largest exporter of beef (buffalo meat) in the world. The legal trick here is simple: killing cows is banned by law, but selling and exporting buffalo meat (Carabeef) is a multi-billion-dollar business.

Meat Hubs in Holy Lands: Guess where most of these huge meat plants operate? In places like Uttar Pradesh, right near sacred holy sites like Prayagraj! While people give big speeches about culture on public stages, billions of dollars worth of meat gets exported right out of these holy lands.

Unfiltered Truth

Honestly, we deserve an award for the dramatic show we put on in the name of cow protection!

We shout loudly on news channels about saving local cow breeds, but we bring in foreign breeds like Jersey and Holstein cows just to make more money from milk. The ‘Mother’ gets royal care only as long as she gives milk. The moment she stops, her home is gone, and she gets kicked out onto the street! Ah, what a great moral principle, right?

And do not even get me started on our modern cow shelters (‘Gaushalas’) that story is both sad and funny! They are built mostly for politicians to take photos, give election speeches, and collect government funding checks. Away from the cameras, thousands of these “sacred” cows starve inside without proper food, living in their own waste and dying of diseases. If it was not shown on TV, does it mean it did not happen?

Our double standards do not end here. We wear fancy leather shoes, drive cars with leather seats, and use bone-china plates at home!

Yet, we protect the cow with a shield of holy pride while sending her cousin buffaloes to slaughterhouses without a second thought just to earn foreign money. Why? Because “cow” and “buffalo” are two different words in the dictionary, right?

To top it all off, the same people who harass others on the street over beef have no problem when the government collects taxes from the multi-billion-dollar leather and meat export businesses.

Meat for Foreigners, Aadhaar Rules for Us!

So let me get this straight is this the real idea here? If you are an Indian holding an Aadhaar card inside the country, you are strictly not allowed to eat it. But sending that exact same meat across borders so people in other countries can eat it and bring in billions of dollars is totally fine? So human beings in the rest of the world can eat it, but Indians inside India cannot? Ah, what incredible double standards!

Anyone who wants to argue about this is more than welcome. Just make sure you check your facts and real numbers before coming to talk. As a person, I am not trying to encourage anyone to eat meat, nor am I acting like a saint yes, I have eaten it, and yes, we are rising cows right at home, so I know both sides of this story inside out. If calling a cow ‘Mother’ lasts only as long as she gives milk after which she is left to choke on 50 kg of plastic in a garbage dump or if we use legal tricks to kill her cousin buffaloes for money, then please, do us a favor. Stop calling this ‘worship’, ‘culture’, or ‘devotion’. It is not holy. It is just convenient hypocrisy wrapped in a holy blanket!
